SDC has completed and handed over a new state-of-the-art home for Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) Histopathology and Diagnostic Cytology department. The project, which is located on the fourth floor of SDC-constructed 1000 Discovery Drive, provides over 23,350 sq ft of high spec laboratory and office space.
The new facility combines laboratory areas, write-up zones and staff rest spaces, all designed with a strong emphasis on safety, efficiency and comfort. With flexibility and sustainability at its core, the space enables CUH to incorporate genomics into routine diagnostic work.
A key innovation of the project included the installation of a pipe and pump system suitable for distributing formalin. The system was developed to minimise exposure of laboratory personnel to hazardous fumes, improve accuracy and efficiency in sample preparation workflows, and comply with stringent health and safety requirements.

The move into 1000 Discovery Drives marks a significant step forward in the hospital’s ability to deliver faster diagnostic turnaround, and improved referral-to-treatment processes. Additionally, it enhances the accuracy and depth of diagnostic insights, helping to inform prognosis and provide more precise treatment decisions for patients.
With the facility now officially opened, it marks a crucial enhancement to the delivery of diagnostic services at Cambridge University Hospital. SDC is proud to have delivered an innovative, efficient space that supports high-quality patient care and strengthens collaboration across the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
