On Wednesday 11th June, SDC held a topping-out ceremony for Merlin Place.
The historic tradition marks the placement of the final beam at the highest point of the building’s structure and symbolises a significant step in the development of the project.
Located opposite the entrance to Cambridge Science Park, Merlin Place was developed by Kadans Science Partner, a leading investor in the development of environments where scientific organisations can thrive. With Cambridge hailed as a global centre of excellence in science and technology innovation, the build is set to be an impressive addition to the north cluster.
The event began with members of the site team, the Kadans team, and key stakeholders gathering to commemorate the development of the project.
Board Director, Andy Shiner, was also in attendance and emphasised SDC’s dedication and commitment to working collaboratively with Kadans Science Partner:
“SDC Builders are proud to continue the construction of a facility designed to support scientific research and innovation. Our role is to bring Kadan’s vision to life, ensuring the highest standards of functionality and efficiency. Topping out marks a significant step in our commitment in the development of an exciting and unique building”.
Due to be delivered in 2026, the project will provide 139,000 sq. ft (GIA) of premium purpose-built laboratory space & office accommodation comprising CL2 wet labs (with extract to atmosphere provision) and offices arranged over 6 storeys.
The project is working towards a whole life net zero carbon lab building, with aims of BREEAM Target Excellent, EPC target A and a WiredScore Rating target of Platinum. To bring Kadans Science Partner’s vision of sustainability to fruition, the project will comprise of a green roof and significant PV panel coverage, as well as 313 cycle bays and electric vehicle charging points.
