Special Projects

Established in 1992, SDC Special Projects was set up to undertake works of a smaller, more specialist nature. The idea was to create a division with the ability to provide the skills and experience of a large contractor but on smaller scale projects, typically ranging from £50k to £3m.

Despite being part of the SDC Group, Special Projects acts as an autonomous division with its own dedicated team of Construction Managers, Estimators and Quantity Surveyors, along with highly skilled Site Operatives. The division is led by a combination of Gary Wykes (Board Director) and Graham Staughton (Special Projects Manager), who have a combined history of 68 years at SDC. Running Special Projects as a standalone division – but under the umbrella of SDC – means the department has access to all the benefits of a large contractor (in-house H&S, Quality, M&E, Design and BIM), without the same overheads. This business model has proven to be extremely successful, with turnover rising from £100k in 1992 to £26.5m in 2018.

This sustained growth has enabled Special Projects to develop a highly diversified portfolio spanning across a variety of sectors, including Education, Commercial, Automotive, Leisure, Retail, Healthcare, Listed buildings and Refurbishments. Many of the schemes are of a complex nature with requirements, such as fast-paced delivery, challenging site logistics or working in an operational facility.
