The two founders of SDC, Bob Reynolds and Dave Ledsom, became acquainted working together as managers for a national civil engineering company.  They both shared a common vision of wanting to create a construction company that offered a better and different type of service to that commonly available at the time.

The Company, known then as Survey, Design and Construction Ltd, was formed with offices based in Lime Street, Bedford

1976: SDC expanded throughout this period moving premises to Grove Place.

1978 – 1979: Four more properties in Grove Place were purchased and refurbished, accommodating the companies continued growth.  In the late 1970’s the small works department, now well established in the local house extension market, occupied part of the Company’s first industrial development in Sergeants Way.

The Company name was changed to SDC Builders Ltd to make it clearer that the core business was construction. SDC was well established in industrial and commercial sectors, in both traditional tendering, and design and build. Due to the demands of continued growth, SDC built its own office, Limegrove House and the Company relocated.  The name “Limegrove” was taken from the previous two addresses that the Company occupied.

1988: Brian Fox was appointed as Managing Director allowing Bob and Dave to concentrate more on the development side of the business.

1989: the Milton Keynes Leisure Plaza was constructed, at £8 million by far and away the largest value contract in the Company’s history.

Another large leisure project, the Aspects Leisure Complex was completed. This was a joint development with two local developers and City & County Developments Ltd, a Company formed to handle the growing development business. A number of new divisions where formed during this period to deal with business growth, including Special Projects, Housing and Limegrove Supplies. SDC embarked on a programme of continual improvement, the formation of the Health and Safety department was just one of many initiatives.

1997: The Company celebrated its 25th anniversary

1998: another landmark project was secured, the new one million square feet engine manufacturing facility for Rover/BMW at Hams Hall, valued at £70 million on a 50 acre site. Turnover reached £80 million.

Ford purchase Land Rover, a new major client is established providing business from Ford, Aston Martin and Land Rover.

2002: SDC celebrated 30 years of business.  Also in this year Co-Founder Bob Reynolds retires.

2004: SDC Employee Benefit Trust is formed, acquiring the share capital of SDC Holdings Ltd thus removing any doubts about the future ownership of the group, and to enable available future profits to be distributed to the employees.

2007: The remaining founding Owner Dave Ledsom and Chairman Brian Fox retired.

2010: SDC celebrates being successful in its application to become a Chartered Building Company

2012: On 14 September 2012 SDC commenced its 40th year since formation

2015: In this year SDC was short listed for Contractor of the Year Award, it was also the first year SDC's turnover broke the £150 million mark
