SDC’s involvement with The Higgins Museum

The Higgins is located on Castle Lane in Bedford and is run by Bedford Borough Council and the Trustees of the Cecil Higgins Collection. The Museum brings together three venues (the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford Museum and Bedford Gallery) onto one site. The building, which dates back 200 years, underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2013 and has remained open since.

The Higgins is surrounded by stunning gardens, which can be seen upon entrance to the museum and continue by wrapping around the rear. A group of dedicated volunteers meet every Monday to look after these areas, not only carrying out maintenance (weeding and pruning) but also designing and planning for the future. The project, which relies solely on donations, provides opportunities for the volunteers to learn new skills, meet new people and give back to the community.

The donations received from the SDC Community Fund have been spent on tools, gardening gloves, soil improvers, watering equipment such as hosepipes, plants, materials and other essential equipment to improve the appearance of the gardens. Several projects have been completed with the new equipment, bringing the gardens back to life.
