Reaching the Top of the Tree

A key milestone has been reached in the construction of 1000 Discovery Drive, a new multi-let laboratory and office space on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. SDC and Prologis UK, developers of life sciences real estate, held a Topping Out Ceremony on 21 March 2023 to mark the occasion.

The ceremony signified the completion of the building’s structure. A commemorative plaque was fixed to the beam, and project team members from each discipline signed the steel before it was lifted into place on the roof.

A speech was given by Daniel Changer, Director at SDC, discussing the next stage of the building’s construction and the benefits to the community upon completion at the end of 2023, such as increased job opportunities and continued business growth for the area.

The structure of the building is now complete, and construction moves onto the façade and fitout of the communal areas. Project handover for the Shell and Core is set for October 2023, following which the fitout will commence.

Once complete, 1000 Discovery Drive will offer laboratory and office space in a variety of sizes and specifications but will also deliver important amenities for the wider campus and community, such as a café and open-source community centre, to create an environment that is both socially inviting and explorable.
